Safety Consideration for Stairways at Work

Stairways are frequently used on job sites for accessing different levels and moving materials. It's important to remember that falls from stairs can result in severe injuries and even fatalities. Employers have a duty to ensure the safety of their workers by implementing measures to prevent slip, trip, and fall hazards on all walking and working surfaces. Workers also play a crucial role in maintaining their own safety by using stairways as intended.

All workers should take the following precautions when stairways are used on any job site:

  • Always use handrails when ascending or descending any stairway.

  • Be cautious of environmental conditions such as ice, snow, or rain accumulation that may build up on the steps of stairways.

  • Stairs must be kept clean and free of trash, debris, and anything that could cause the steps to be slippery.

  • Never use stairways or landings as a storage place, even temporarily.

  • Only take one step at a time when ascending or descending the stairway.

Stay safe out there!
